Home remedies for infections will be divided into three different categories: 1) bacterial infections 2) fungal infections 3) viral infections

Each category will suggest several home remedies and clarify the specific ailment(s) it treats.

Bacterial Infections - These are single-celled micro-organisms. They can live inside the body or they can thrive on non-living surfaces such as; books, doorknobs, etc. Bacterial infections are conventionally treated with anti-biotics. Bacteria are part of our norma flora, and are necessary for life.

When a particular strain overcomes the body; the person is said to be suffering from a bacterial infection.

A) BURDOCK - Burdock is eaten in Asia. It is a perennial grown in China, Europe and United States.

Uses - Burdock roots have anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties (Reisch et al, 1967). This benefit is lost when the root dries. It has been used to treat eczema, psoriasis, canker sores, poison ivy and boils. It can also be used as a compress for arthritis, and hemorrhoids.

Available Forms - capsules, cream, tea, root, fluid extract

Adult Dosages and Route -

Fluid extract by mouth - 1-3cc; 2x/day

Root tincture by muouth - 3-5cc; 2-4x/day

Topical - apply as a compress or use as a cream as needed

Precautionary Information - Do not use while pregnant as it is an uterine stimulant. Should be used with caution by those with cardiac disorders or with diabetes.

B) CELANDINE - This is a member of the poppy family. It cleanses the liver and gallbladder. It stimulates digestion and decreases inflammation.

C) EUCALYPTUS - Herbal eucalytus products come from the leaves of the eucalyptus globulus labill plant. It has been used for more than 100 years to alleviate nasal congestion.

Uses - It is used to treat nasal and pulmonary congestion. It is also used in combination with other products to treat sinusitis and pharyngitis. It is used for aromatherapy and as an antiseptic for wounds.

Available Forms - fluid extract, aqueous-alcoholic prep, essential oil

Adult Dosages and Route - Dilute internal dosages before use.

Eucalyptol by mouth - 0.05-0.2cc

Eucalyptus by mouth - 0.05-2.0cc or 0.3 to 0.6g daily

Fluid extract by mouth - 3g; 1-2x/day

Topical aqueous-alcoholic preparation - 5% to 10% daily, apply as needed(Blumenthal, 1998)

Topical essential oil - several drops rubbed into skin daily as needed

Precautionary Information - Eucalyptus should not be used during pregnancy or lactation. It should not be given to children younger than 2 years of age. As little as 3.5cc of eucalyptus oil taken internally can be fatal. Can cause vomiting, dizziness, and abdominal discomfort (burning sensation).

D) PROPOLIS - A natural bee product.

Uses - Treats inflammation, promotes wound healing and is an immune system stimulant. It can be used to treat fungal, protozal and bacterial infections.

Available Forms - Tablets, capsules, topical cream, fluid extract

Adult Dosages and Route -

Capsules or tablets - 600mg daily

Fluid extract - 15-30 drops mixed with 4 oz of warm water; 3x/day

Topical cream - apply to affected area as needed

Precautionary Information - Persons sensitive to bees should not use propolis. Individuals with asthma should not use propolis (Jellin et al, 2004)

BACTERIAL INFECTION TREATED - Bladder infections, upper and lower urinary tract infections, pneumonia (though some are viral, fungal etc), tuberculosis, cat-scratch disease, staphylococcus infections, streptococcus infections

Additional flu and common cold symptom relief - Pulsatilla is a well-known herbal remedy for earaches or ear infections, and it is also often used for the relief of cough and respiratory congestion.

Fungal Infections - Fungi are different than certain bacteria and viruses in that fungi do not require human tissue to reproduce and perpetuate. Most fungi that have been connected with human diseases are free-living in nature.

A) BLOODROOT - Bloodroot is a perennial found in Canada and in the southern parts of the United States.

Uses - It is used for its anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. It is used as a topical treatment for ear, nose and skin cancer.

Available Forms - Extract and tincture

Adult Dosages and Route -

Extract - 0.06-0.3cc 3x/da (1:1 in 60% alcohol)

Tincture - 0.3-2.0cc 3x/day

Precautionary Information - Do not take during prenancy or lactation. Do not give to children. This herb should be handled with gloves by a qualified herbalist. Can cause skin irritation.

B) BURDOCK - Burdock is an antiseptic and can aid in resolving bacterial infections and fungal infections.

C) PEACH - The peach tree is found throughout the world.

Uses - Topically, peach is known to treat skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, warts, burns, and abrasions. The bark and leaves are used as an expectorant and as an astrigent. Peach has been shown to contain anti-fungal properties (Mishra et al, 1990)

Adult Dosages and Route -

Tea (bark) - Boil 1/2 oz bark in one pint of water. Let stand 15 minutes. Drink 3x/day

Tea (leaves) - Boil 1 oz leaves in 1 pint of water. Let stand for 15 minutes. Drink 3x/day

Precautionary Information - Peach pits contain cyanide and can be fatal. Wear gloves when handling peach leaves, kernels, pits and bark. Severe vomiting, abdominal pain, seizures and death can occur.

D) TEA TREE OIL - Oil distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia. It is native to Australia. The Australian aborigines have used Melaleuca extract for hundreds of years to treat burns, abrasians, acne, acne scars, etc.

Uses - Tea tree oil has been studied and shown to be effective as a treatment for fungal (candida albicans, aspergillus, microsporum etc) and bacterial infections (staphylococcus, e-coli, etc) (Concha et al, 1998). It is not as effective on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Mann et al, 2000). It has been used on eczema, warts, psoriasis, acne, fungal, viral and bacterial infections. Applications are topical only.

Adult Dosages and Route -

Topical use only - Use 70%-100% on fungal infections and 5%-15% on acne. Use as needed.

Precautionary Information - External use only, contact dermatitis, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Viral Infections - Viral infections can not be treated with anti-biotics. The virus itself lives inside the cell and the cellular wall serves to insulate the virus from medicines. Many illnesses originating from a virus require adequate rest, lots of hydration, and lots of immune system boosters. No matter what the infection, one should always assist the body's homeostasis with immune system boosters, rest and hydration.

A) BREWERS YEAST - Brewers yeast is a fungus (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)which is a product of the beer making process. It is also grown specifically as a nutritional supplement.

Uses - Brewers Yeast is rich in minerals (chromium), protein, selenium, and very dense in B-complex vitamins. It does NOT contain B-12. Studies have also identified its anti-viral properties specifically against HPV, poliovirus, adenovirus, enterovirus and others (Li et al, 1998).

Available Forms - Tablets, powder

Adult Dosages and Route -

1-2Tsp (15-30 grams); 3x/ day

Precautionary Information - Brewers Yeast is known for having a very bitter taste. "De-bittered" Brewers Yeast is often not real Brewers Yeast as it tends to be deficient in the biologically active form of chromium (glucose tolerance factor - GTF). Do not use if person has Crohn's disease as one may build anti-bodies to the yeast. May also cause headaches, flatulence, and decrease blood glucose.

B) ECHINACEA - Echinacea is a perennial native to North America. It is a Native American remedy.

Uses - It is used internally as an immune stimulant, immune suppotor, and as a prophylactic for colds, influenza, and other infections whether viral, fungal or bacterial. Echinacea is used topically to promote wound healing, and to treat wounds, burns and leg ulcers. It is most effective when used at onset of symptoms or prophylactically.

Available Forms - Capsules, fluid extract, tincture, tea, juice, sublingual

Adult Dosages and Route -

Capsules - 500mg-1g; 3x/day (McCaleb et al, 2000)

Fluid extract - 1-2cc; 3x/day; mixed with water (1:1 dilution)

Tea - 2-tsp (4g) powdered herb simmered for 15 minutes

Used Prophylactically for colds and infections- Root tincture 1/2-tsp; 2x/day (Romm, 2000)

Precautionary Information - Immunosuppression may occur with extended therapy. Do not use for longer than 8-weeks without a 3-week rest period. Should not be used by persons with auto-immune diseases. Do not use if pregnant or during lactation.

C) PROPOLIS - It is an immune system booster, anti-inflammatory and promotes wound healing. Studies have shown its effectiveness as an anti-viral against HPV (Amoros et al, 1992) and as an anti-influenza (Serkedjieva et al, 1992).

D) SPIRULINA - Spirulina is an algea which lives in high salt and alkaline waters in the tropics.

Uses - Spirulina posseses anti-viral, anti-tumor, anti-cholesterol, and immunological properties (Chamarro et al, 1996). Supports and stimulates the immune system.

Available Forms - Tablets, powder, fresh plant, component of drinks

Adult Dosages and Route - 3 to 5 grams daily before meals

Precautionary Information - Use with caution while pregnant, lactating, or when given to children. Some spirulina may contain high mercury levels due to the waters the plant may be harvested from.
