Home Remedies for Acne and Acne Scars

A) Aloe Vera - Aloe is a succulant plant found throughout the world. It is native to Africa.
Uses - Topically, it is used to treat acne, minor burns, cuts, abrasions, and wrinkles
Available Forms -Capsules, gel, juice, shampoo, conditioner and tincture
Adult and Child Dosages and Route - For Skin Irritations and Wounds
Capsules by Mouth - 100-200mg at Bedtime
Extract by Mouth - 50-100mg at Bedtime
Topical gel leaf - Apply to affected area as needed but DO NOT use on deep wounds
Precautionary Information - Dried aloe juice should not be given to children under the age of 12, and should not be taken internally by lactating mothers or used during pregancy.
It should be carefully used by persons with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and other bowel disorders since it may contain aloe latex (Newell et al, 1996)
Persons with hypersentivity to garlic, tulips and onions should not use aloe topically.
B) Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris) - Barberry is a shrub found in North America and in Europe.
Uses -Barberry is used as an anti-microbial against bacteria, fungi, viruses and chlamydia.
It's primary uses include, bacterial diarrhea, intestinal parasites infections, and ocular infections. It can also be used for stomach ailments, such as, ulcers.
Barberry has also been used topically for acne scars, dry, scaly skin and psoriasis.
Available Forms -
Fluid extract tablets, tinctures, tea
Adult Dosages and Route -
Decoction - ( extraction of water-soluble drug substances by boiling )- 1.5-3.0g/day by mouth
Tablets - 200mg 2 to 4x/day
Tincture - 3-6ml/day (1:2 dilution)
Precautionary Information - Barberry can cause spontaneous abortions therefore it should not be used during pregnancy or if you intend on becoming pregnant.
It can also cause hypotension (low blood pressure), disorientation, GI upset, such as diarrhea, and shortness of breath.
C) Figwort - This is a perennial plant found in China
Uses - most often used topically for skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis.
It is used internally to minimize GI upset, reduce inflammation and stimulate cardiac activity
Available Forms - Tincture, soak, and fluid extract
Adult Dosages and Route -
Fluid extract by mouth - 2-8ml (1:1 dilution) daily, max 2xday
Infusion by mouth - 2-8g daily herb
Tincture by mouth - 2-4ml (1:5 dilution) daily, max 2x/day
Topical - Use as a soak or a compress as needed
Precautionary Information - Do not use during pregnancy or while lactating. It is also not to be used by person with cardiac issues. It can cause a decrease in Heart Rate, or Asystole (flat-line). This product should be stored in a cool, dry place.
D) Oregon Grape (Mahonia Aquifolium) - This is a shrub found in the western part of the United States. Research focuses on the use of Oregon Grape as an anti-oxidant. This plant is not the same as barberry (berberis vulgaris)
Uses - The tincture is used to treat certain skin disorders, such as acne, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, etc. It can also be used for arthritis and other joint conditions.
The root bark is used to treat diarrhea, fever, ulcers and stomach upsets.
Available Forms - Capsules, fluid extract, powder, tincture, topical cream and oitments.
Adult Dosages and Route
Powder by Mouth - 1/2 to 1g 3x/day
Tincture by Mouth - 2-4ml 3x/day
Topical - Apply to affected area 3x/day
Precautionary Information - Oregon Grape should not administered to children, it should also not be used during pregnancy or lactation. May cause nausea, and vomitting. May cause hypersentivity. If this occurs, discontinue use and administer an anti-histamine or consult your physician. Excessive use can lead to poisoning and death.
